Abstract:
Evaluation of radiofrequency coils encompasses electrical characteristics, radiofrequency fields, image quality, and safety. Differences in test conditions and normalization limit the comparability of results across studies. Following a broad literature review, 20 representative publications from 2021 to 2026, together with 16 standards and guidelines and 8 methodological references, are examined in a narrative synthesis to clarify the definitions, measurement conditions, and applicability of evaluation metrics. An evaluation framework is developed across five dimensions: bench electrical performance, channel and receive-chain performance, in-scanner radiofrequency fields, image and task performance, and safety and risk. Implementation considerations are summarized for design verification, acceptance testing, constancy testing and quality control, and first-in-human evaluation. The literature indicates that improvement in a single metric does not establish an overall performance benefit. Evaluation should therefore account for the intended use, test conditions, and safety requirements; assess physical performance and task outcomes together; and report repeatability, uncertainty, and acceptance criteria. The framework provides a reference for test design and interpretation.
