Nowadays cloud computing is not only a research hot spot in academia, but also attracts large interest from industry. Thus, cloud computing has drawn extensive attention from governments worldwide.The goal of cloud computing is to use computing resources like using water and electricity, and to use storage resources like using banks. Such a way of using computing will greatly improve the utilization of computing resources,reduce waste, and save cost. However, it is not easy to achieve such a goal due to a number of limiting factors that surrounds implementation and utilization of cloud computing platforms. This thematic issue covers a wide range of excellent researches on the fundamentals and advances of cloud computing from several institutions including: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Jiangnan Institute of Computing Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University, PLA University of Science and Technology, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and so on. Topics such as back-end technology, front-end technology, cloud computing security, and performance of cloud computing systems are discussed in this special issue.
